This page is dedicated to defining sustainable strategies. During the next couple of days, we will be defining what sustainable strategies means through pictures and text. To begin, let us define sustainable strategies. A sustainable strategy is a plan or project that is capable of maintaining itself. For example, in the Hostel we are staying at, the latrine facility is employing a unique sustainable strategy that I have never seen before. Take a look below and see for yourself. This project is an example of a sustainable strategy because it is compact so that it saves space and more importantly, uses the excess clean water after flushing to wash your hands.
After a couple of minutes of walking around we found our first parklet! The idea of a parklet was created in partnership with the San Francisco Planning Department, the Department of Public Works, the Municipal Transportation Agency, and the Mayor's Office to allow Community Benefit Districts (CBD's) to reclaim street parking spaces for public "parks" and spaces. CBD's include ground floor business owners, non-profit and community organizations, and fronting property owners that fund, and maintain the spaces. We found one of the 43 parklets in the city in front of the Haight Steet Martket at 1530 Haight Street. Below is a map of all the parklets in the city and of the Haight Street parklet (#32 on the map).
